Diane Arbus

Truthfully I don't know much about this photographer and I cannot really be bothered researching, I just really like her style and the her subjects. Her portraiture really captures what that person is all about (wether it is real or staged), and her subject seem to be quirky left of centre eccentric characters, usually the outcasts and those marginalized by society. What I really like is that it feels like she spent quite some time photographing those around her, lived like them and got to know them, well that's my impression anyway. Fantastic.

Takahiro Ogawa

Black and white. Really good black and white photography has great contrast (obviously) but these are great because of the subject matter,  especially his use of materials and textures. Interesting editorial pics.

Yang Yong Liang

Beautiful fine art photography/ mixed media. Inspired by chinese style calligraphy painting, these works are a look at contemporary cities while somehow calling on the past and future at the same time. Beautiful.

Very pretty, stylized black and white photography. High exposures leave them looking pristine dream like and ephemeral. More works here.

Robert Doisneau

I mentioned Robert Doisneau, in yesterdays post and decided to feature this beloved man.

Playful, and expertly captured, excellent timing with a eye for detail. A patience, and the love of people watching, waiting to capture these lovely, surprising and fun moments that occur around us every day. He noticed them and forever immortalized them with his camera. Wonderful.

Sometimes the right juxtaposition of images can create a mood that a sole image would not do on its own. These photos were featured on a website that i visited recently, i then found this online catalogue of his works and these images here were in fact not part of the same series. Seeing these images surrounded by similar photographs, presumably taken in the same place and time, somehow detracted from their impact and were less provocative, and the dark mood they create now dissipated when found in their chronological context. So i guess my message is sometimes placing images together that were not taken at the same time creates more interesting effects than that if placed within their 'family'.  Picking out a few photographs to place in a series, even if you took 100 photos, is better because they will not fade in a sea of 'sameness'.

Sometimes hugs and being silly are the best and simplest pleasures.
